Japan's Foreign Ministry says a Chinese government map, published dozens of years ago, uses Japanese names for the Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea, instead of Chinese names.

The map was published in 1969 by China's state bureau of surveying and mapping.

It uses the Japanese names of Senkaku archipelago and Uotsuri Island, instead of the Chinese names of Diaoyu archipelago and Diaoyu Island, which it currently uses.

The existence of the Chinese map was revealed last month at a Lower House committee session by a ruling Liberal Democratic Party lawmaker.

Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida evaluated the map as precious, and said the ministry had been considering making it public.

Japan controls the Senkaku Islands. China and Taiwan claim them. The Japanese government maintains the islands are an inherent part of Japan's territory, in terms of history and international law. It says there is no issue of sovereignty to be resolved over them.

The Chinese government began to claim the islands in the 1970s, after it was pointed out that the areas near the islands may be rich in oil and other natural resources.

On Monday, the Japanese Foreign Ministry posted the map on its website as new proof that the Senkaku Islands are Japan's inherent territory.

Ministry officials say they want to demonstrate to the international community that Japan's claim over the islands is legitimate.

日本外務省昨日在網頁公開，宣稱是證明日本擁有釣魚台的新證據，當中包括一張，被指是中國國家測繪總局於1969 年發行的地圖，將釣魚台一帶島嶼，以「尖閣群島」、「魚釣島」等日本名稱標示。日本政府宣稱，中方是在釣魚台周邊海域，發現可能蘊藏石油等資源後，才在70年代起，主張擁有釣魚台主權，而在1971年前，都是使用「尖閣群島」等名稱。

中國外交部回應說，釣魚台及其附屬島嶼，是中國固有領土，有著充分的歷史和法理依據，日方企圖以支離破碎的材料去否認這個事實，毫無意義。
