A fire was reported — and quickly put out — on the new span of the Bay Bridge on Monday night.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the blaze was reported at 10:09 p.m. as a fire under the "new part of the bridge." Flames were blowing out of an expansion joint grating on eastbound lane 1, east of Treasure Island, officials told NBC Bay Area.
SJPD Increases Presence in 5 Gang Zones
Officials didn't immediately know what was on fire, but speculated that accumulated debris in a grate might have caught fire when a cigarette butt — or something similar — was tossed from a passing car.
