I have just bought a flash 580EXII and I am a new guy of flash. I have tried a flash photo of my family with harbour view background (very typical tourist -- Ha Ha !)

Of course, I use a tripod and slow shutter speed . I use F5.6 and 2.5 seconds to take the harbour view background while my family standing 2.5 seconds in front of the photo to accept the flash. A freeze photo of my family is seen as expected.

The problem :

When I expand the photo in my LCD monitor by 1:1 ratio. I found a little motion of my family. It just likes a freeze image with blur outline (same problem is found for front-curtain sync and second-curtain sync flash modes).

I know that this problem can be reduced by increasing the shutter speed. (e.g. increase the ISO & aperture). But it will reduce the photo quality (I can't accept the noise when ISO640 or above is used).

Does any Ching have good balanced setting (F/stop, shutter speed, ISO, etc) or other flash technique in taking this kind of photo ?

1. Do not take photo under street light. ie only light source must only come from your flash

2. 2.5sec is too long (not for your camera, but for your family members), suggest to take photo less than 1 sec

3. f should be around 5

4. ISO 1600

Your family members are lit with ambient lights, that's why they blur
If it is completely dark, and the flash is the only light source for your family, it will be sharp. But your family will have some body movement in 2.5sec, therefore their body edge would absorb some background harbour light.

So take the advice from above chings

If you use APSC, don't take it with too high ISO,
and try to reduce the f to 7or 11
