I am a DSLR beginner and I have got the following question.

My kit lens is Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS, and it costs only few hundred dollars.

I noted Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM costs $7500.

Not to mention the difference in the aperture, it is just 1mm different. Why the price differs so much? What's so special with this lens?
