I have both and obviously, the 24-70mm is a better lens. However, the 24-120 is not too bad either. Comparing the 2:
1) weight - the 24-70mm is quite heavy especially with a FF body. I bought the 24-120 because I liked to travel light (1 body, 1 standard zoom, 1 ultra wide)
2) sharpness and color - I definitely would go for the 24-70mm, but the 24-120mm is just a shade less in performance
3) vignetting - the 24-120mm is actually rather bad but for jpeg, the in-camera correction on my D800 can do a good job fixing it and with raw, just use lens correction in PS
I would use the 24-70 for more serious studio shots. For more casual shots and traveling, I would rather take the lighter 24-120 as I prefer the lessor weight.
