I am planning to buy a 2nd hand Nikon Camera.
1. May I ask what's the difference between buying 1st hand and second hand DSLR?

2. When buying 2nd hand DSLR, what should I check to make sure it is okay?

If u are not quite sophisticated about camera bodies, better NOT buy 2nd hand unless the is still warranty.

If u are good in computer, even a DSLR with 2 or 3 dead pixels is ok. If u can find dead pixels, u may ask the seller to further reduce the price.

My D40X has at least 3 dead pixels in the sensor. BUT I don't want to waste $ to fix, so I used a photoshop script to remove them (by average 4 adjacent pixels) in batch mode. Now all the photos I took with the D40X are ok.

Thank you very much for such a timely advice. ^^ I would like to ask is magnifiying the photo taken is the only way to check whether there is any problem on the CDD/CMOS? Thanks

u should bring a notebook if u wanna check the dead dot, it is very difficult to check the dead dot using the LCD of the camera

for bright spot: use manual focus, cover the lens cap, use manual mode, use any combination, e.g. f8, 1/125 should give a totally "BLACK" jpeg
for dark spot: use manual focus, point to a well lighted white paper, use manual mode to overexpose it 3 or 4 steps, should give a totally "WHITE" jpeg. If u use flash, make sure the lenses does not block the flash light
