I have a Canon G10 and would like to look into buying my first DSLR but my budget is no more than $5000. Is it better to buy a new D60 or second hand D80? The D60 seems to be so attractive now since the kit is only $3980 from Broadway but I feel that the D80 may last me longer...

unless you 100% sure the second hand D80 is in very good condition & has warranty for at least a year otherwise you should go for new D60 la...

generally speaking it is very hard to check if there is any hidden problem of 2nd hand stuff.... so dont take the risk la... & also D60 is a very good dslr in fact.

Michael, no offense at all, just for discussion sake.

I would say it is rather easy to check for a 2nd hand camera if you have a certain degree of understanding to a camera's body. Plus it is easy to see a camera's condition.

For unexpected electronic problems, it's just pure luck and it happens with new cameras as well, right? ;-)

As a matter of fact, I just helped my friend to get a 2nd hand D80 kit last month, it is 99.5% new, extended 3yr warranty from Fortxxxxx, with less than 1000 counts. Also came with a lot of accessories incl. star filters, for merely $5.5k. The fact is that, as there were too many newbies entering the DSLR market, a lot of them found out they cannot manipulate a DSLR and do sell them quick. Look out for these "good buys" in the market.
