According to a camera grade level delivered in the following websites, D300s's level is as same as D90, i.e. both of them are 'Intermediate to Advanced' level whilst D300 belongs to 'Advance to semi-professional' level.

D300s is half level above D90,
it has a 51 points AF system with very fast focusing while D90 only has 11 points AF and slower focusing speed.
also, D300s has better control over D90, so u dont need to go into the menu as often as D90.
but of coz, D300s is heavier than D90 and more expensive, so it depends on ur need and budget

D90 got different shooting modes where D300 only got PASM.

It's a big different compare to D80. D90 is smarter, better exposure, and iso performance.

D90 will win over D80 and D200.

D90 and D300(s) are Nikon's 2nd generation dslr.
