The key point is better no need to use flash direct to the baby. It will be harm if flashing child eyes so frequently. Last year, I use Nikon 17-35mm to take a McDonald birthday party without flash, the perform is very good.

I used Nikon 80-200 f2.8 VR since my daughter started walking!
I can capture many good photos on her while she is at a distance.
No regret!!!

if you are using D80 or above, you may consider 80-200 f/2.8, for sport, I've used and ok and cheap.

I've used 70-300 but the response is slow, may not good to catch your son running all the time. I've test it with a dog, very difficult to catch them :-(

for 17-35, it is good to taking inside a very narrow and crowd area. Such as inside McDonald, home, or taking landscape for him.

For protrail, 50 f/1.4 is good on it.

sorry, I found the response of 儍瓜機 is not fast enough. Children usually taking snap shot, they never stand still and waiting for you to take photo.
