N 24 - 85/2.8-4 is a good lens with 1:2 macro function. It is lighter and provides superb image quality comparable to N 24-70/2.8. It is not a "cheap" lens.

how possibly can 24-85 2.8-4 IQ be better than N24-70???

according to kenrockwell, it is not. I agree it could do closer macro view though

Photos posted on the web (by Nikon users with these two lenses) can evidence this.

In fact, good photos depends more on the shooting skill and conditions, rather than pricey lenses.

I have 24-85 and it is a good lens for photo shooting. The price is very reasonable than 24-70 and the quality is also good plus having 1:2 marco function.

N 24 - 85/2.8-4 :

1. light weight, easy to carry
2. favourable price
3. 1:2 macro function
4. greater zoom range
5. superb quality
6. good 'picnic" lens for full-frame cameras



N 24 - 70/2.8

1. too heavy, not suitable to carry especially for overseas trips
2. unreasonably expensive
3. dust easily gets in
4. zoom ring too close to camera, not convenient to handle

Howver, you may still choose the latter if you have unlimited budget and wish to have a feeling of "show off'"
