I am using a D300 and want to upgrade. If switching to D700 or D3, what exactly shall I gain (other than full frame)?

I also planning to upgrade, D300 is great, but except the noise control, when shotting in dark.
Just back from a trip, when shot a guys far away in not very bright enviroment, using a 200mm x1.5, therefore actually 300mm.
I can minimise the shutter speed and depth of field by pushing the ISO to 640, I was worrying the noise for over ISO 640....

D700 will be my only choice, also thinking of 5DII, but I only have Nikon lens,

Thanks a lot for all your feedback. Let me answer:

1) I am using the following lenses:
Nikon 70-200 VRII (i.e. LB6), Tamron 17-50 F2.8

2) I want to upgrade hoping to get better picture quality. However, if I upgrade to D700, I will lose the APSC 1.5 times but sometimes I need this tele multiple.

3) ecnfung: are you using nikon 18-200 F3.5-5.6? I also have this lens and when shooting at 200mm, F can only be 5.6 and hence often have a dark and blurred image. After switching to 70-200 F2.8, the picture quality is a lot better. Not sure if this was the problem you mentioned.

1.5x is a crop factor, when u use FF and u crop the same place you even get better image quality than the image that u taken by aps-c

actually I was using the 70-200 F2.8, but It was not so bright, and I need a higher ISO to control the shutter speed, I did not use F2.8 as I worry about focusing with 200mm x1.5 focal lenght...

200mmx1.5
ISO 400

If I have a D700, might be I can push the ISO to 1200 without worrying about the noise, for shaper image, faster shutter speed to freeze the water... might be...

至於捨不得1.5的話, 咪keep兩套囉, 好多ching都keep兩套的

ecnfung: great pic. yes it would be good it you could have used a faster shutter speed to freeze the water...i am now more tempted to change to D700. However, there is a rumor D700 will be discontinued. not sure if it is true or not.

winnwong, if D700 is close to D3 then it is a good buy. i need to lower the cost to upgrade so can not keep both! Believe what nofeel said was right that if I get better quality then there is no point to use D300 anymore. i can simply use D700 and crop.

go for the D700 la, even it's discontinued, it won't effect you taking shoots ma, and even D200 worth quite a bit at the moment.

you can always trade in and out....
