I'm planning to get a DSLR, i cant decide which one to go. Any idea my friends?

I am a Nikon fans and switched from Canon to Nikon a couple of years ago. Believe you should decide first whether you will go C or N in long run. In general, C gives softer pictures, with better colors. N gives harder and sharper pics. That is something I love, so the switch. I also think Nikon makes better lenses in technology. However, N lenses (new ones) are now quite expensive (20% or so more expensive, compared with C) if for the same function/specs. Back to the camera, 550D is a great camera, with many new technologies and functions, while D90 has been there for a while. I am deep into N given the equipment I now have. But if you don't have any burden, then you are free to make a choice, and whatever you choose you will stick to it for a while.

Thanks for marisalwy and amaze8 opinion. I'm also nikon fans...hardly decide because C is new model and N is quite some time. I agree with amaze8 tat N color is sharper, I personal prefer sharp images. I think I know where to go. Hahaha....

Great that you have more or less decided. There is a numor that there will be a new replacement model for either D90 or D700. Rumors are rumors and no one knows. But these two have been there for long so there will be no surprise if there is a replacement camera. But the fact is, judging from Nikon's practice in recent years, price of the new model will be high. So if you find say D90 is good, nothing wrong to buy it now and start enjoying.

about the rumour regarding to the new model. I am double checked with the Nikon representative last month in the PMA show.

They didn't have any information about that yet ...

I guess your choice really comes down to Nikon & Canon. Don't border to look at Sony or other brands. Coz N & C are really the best Jap DSLR out there at the moment.


I think you need to take the following into consideration as well:
1) What is your closest DSLR friend using. If you go for the same brand, there is a convenience of swapping lens.

2) You need to try out both brand with camera about the same level. So you can "FEEL" how does that fit into your hand. Personally I don't think Canon's body design fit well in my hand. I tried out almost every single DSLR canon have up to 1DM4. Doesn't fit well. But Nikon just feel so much better in hand. It is very important for you to find a camera that good fit into your hand. Otherwise you will feel like wearing a wrong sized shoes.

3) For entry level lens and camera, Nikon's build quality is MUCH MUCH better than Canon. Compare it, and you know what I am talking about. Or compare the 50 1.8 for both brand, you will see the difference. Canon is always in plastic unless you go for the L series lens >.<

4) The shutter noise from Canon is just sounds like a toy!!! I am serious! Nikon is the real shutter sound from mechanical parts, but Canon just sounds like some electronic delay or something ...

btw, I am a Nikon user for over 15 years now. Hope my advice is not too bias over Nikon. You try out the above points and judge it by yourself.

As a general rule, it is better to buy the newest offerings. They usually have the latest technology at lower prices; just like buying computers or other electronic gadgets!
In this case it's a bit different, the D90 is a 'real' dslr camera and in my opinion the 550d is a bit less than that.
In the 550d, you don't get a prism, there's only a "pentamirror" just like the Nikon D5000 or models below. I have used the D3, D700 and have problem accepting a slr camera with no prism in the viewfinder, haha...
You also don't get a display on top as a real dslr should have.
Picture quality could very well be similar and perhap the 550d even has a slight edge with its higher rez sensor! Having considered all factors, I bought a D90 too over the 550d for its light weight and easy of use.

I am using both D5000 and 550D. They are both great. But in terms of color and high ISO performance, 550D is slightly better. But the build of D5000 is slightly more solid. I like both of them.

Would you like to share some experience why you are using both brand at the same time? Any advantages with this path?

Do you feel like you are paying everything twice?
