No offense but you are using D700 and still asking this basic Q ?

Anyway back to your Q, most cameras have a working temperature range and you can read the manual.

Most important of all, even if you are going to -20C, as long as you keep your gears inside your clothes while not taking pictures. Taking anything out of your pocket for a few minutes won't turn it into ice, basic physics it is. Of course battery will drain faster under cold conditions.

Depends on how long will you be outside.

The camera body is still mechanical and has some grease/lubricants. If you anticipate you'll be out for say an hour or so, it's better to put a warmer inside your camera bag. If you're just hopping in and out, then it should be fine even hanging the camera out for point and shoot purposes.

Think about it, those National Geographic teams always go to extreme weather conditions and I can tell you, the more professional one is, the less cautious about their equipment they are (it's companys property, i.e. who cares). The chances of ruining your equipment are very low.
