yeah it'd been a real battle for me too. i ended it when i found a 7.1k deal in mongkok. i got a 400d and a 30d now. seriously, that cmos on the 400d is good and the lcd is more accurate. it would be best to have that on a 30d body(40d).
man get the 30d, if u can't wait. just sell it after a couple months.

I plan to get one for travelling, mostly, and I actually thought of getting 400d, but it seems to be a bit too small and light?

haha no lah, i ain't no rich bastard. yeah i gave the 400D to my wife actually. and planning to go on photo taking trips together. so i figure i can use a little different model, but aps-c so we can share lenses.

i got the deal on the 2nd floor sim city. dunno what the tricky part was but it's a "hong" good. and it's 7.1k. not sure if they do installment though.

frankly, aside from all those bs we hear "here" about grip size and alloy body matter the MOST in real life, i think the 400D is a great little camera to travel with. the placement of the buttons and the back LCD to view all info are just GREAT. i dunno why ppl keep saying the top LCD is useful cos we aint living in the old days where u need to adjust ur f stops on the lense. the back lcd shows all u can read and fine tune with no moving down the body to ur belly. it's an invention man. and in fact that's how the 1d mk3 is like too(correct me if i am wrong). so the adjustment buttons are good to me, no complaints. AND, the detail of the 10M cmos is unbeatable, when comparing side by side to the 30D. more megapixels in 90% of real life situations MEANS better resolution and more detail pick up. i can surely tell u. forget about them saying 8megapixel is same as 10megapixel if u do small prints. i am a full time graphic designer. i see lots of pictures every day. detail to me is crucial.

u can see especially on the smallest part of the picture.

the exposure meter on the 400D, however, sometimes is not as accurate as the 30D, dunno why. But it's not to a point where pictures are usuable. So sometimes there're pictures 0.5-1ev under. But that's no pain to me. I rather have a picture under than over. cos an underexposed picture still have a lot of detail in the darker area thanks to this high dynamic range cmos. it's easily adjustable in the softwares. and for a price like that. i think u should really consider it. afterall, i think bodies are meant to be replaced after a year or two since we are all in the transition to something REAL here. like i said if the 30d has that 10m cmos and a price of the 30d now, i would recommend it over the 400d.

i got the tamron 17-50 f/2.8. and planning to get a ef-s 17-55 2.8 IS for my wife. she's got some shake'y hands. =p
the tamron is pretty good. nothing in that focal length beats the sharpness seriously. and a good price tag too.

from any length to any aperture. tamron A16 rocks.
