Canon EF70-300mm f4-5.6 IS USM is better. But if u out of budget then Sigma 70-300mm is ok.

im a EF 70-300mm IS user, im not quite happy about the result this lens have. i regret so much that i didnt get the L lenses.
i rather you save the money get the 100-400L or 70-200L

Why are you not happy with the 70-300 IS? I am thinking of buying it because it has very good reports.

Mainly the quality, soft at 300mm, and when attach to a 400D, the lens find hard to focus at 300.
USM, micro usm not ring type. the front element rotates and squeez loudly.
i regret that i didnt get the 100-400 at the first place. anyway think twice before you buy it.

hi, i'm a 70-300is owner also. The pq at 300mm@F5.6 is a bit soft, but it's better 300mm@F8.

The 100-400 L costs nearly 3 times as much and is outside my budget. Would you say that 300mm at F8 can give acceptable results? Is the focusing at 300mm really so bad that one cannot get sharp pictures?

yes, 300mm at F8 can give acceptable results

It's no problem to get sharp picture at 300mm, but only at daytime by hand or tripod at night. Because it's really difficult to get a steady shot from a 300mm lens compare to a standard range lens.

I thought the IS would be good enough to compenate ones handshake. Is it because F8 is too small an aperture for the IS to be sufficient at night?

Do you think that I should buy this lens? I prefer this range to 70-200mm
