The kind of metering you described above is called "Spot Metering" (點測光). Canon is not so generous to provide this function in their low end DSLR. The best 350D can do is :

• Evaluative 35-zone
• Partial 9% at center
• Center-weighted average

If you need Spot Metering, you have to consider other brands, such as Nikon D70 / D70s.
