Being able to master the basic techniques is already good for beginners:
- correct exposure
- correct focusing, to the right subject
- no handshaking

To take a better photo, you need to work on:
- picture compostion
- depth of view
- capturing the right moment (e.g. portrait)

There are plenty of materials on web about photography. Just read more and learn from other people's photos.

Being a good photographer is to get the most out of what equipment you have. Don't just think you can take better photos if you have better equipment.
