People normally put on a UV filter for protection, a good one (thin and expensive actually increases the amount light that can pass through the filter itself.)

For landscape, you can get a CPL (circular polariser) that lets you control a certain amount of light that will pass though your lens.

Turn it and take a few shot and you'll know.
