just another misunderstanding of some basic knowledge
instead of reading about Depth of Field (which I would suggest you to have a read since you asked the question), you can try do a little test to see for yourself...
put sth like a mug (cup) in front of your computer screen (turned on and showing your desktop with things on it), about 300mm apart, on the table.
frame your image in such a way that your desktop as the background and the mug as you subject.
if you are using your kit lens, use the wide end of your range, focus on your mug and shoot wide open (@max aperture, is it F3.5 on your kit lens?)
do the same with say F11
you should be able to tell the difference.
then, move the mug as close to your screen as possible (if you are on a laptop, use sth instead of a mug) and make the first shot again.
btw, in short, depth of field is how much is in focus from near to far (if you've got a long piece of ruler, line it up and shoot at it)
