This is called "lens flare".
In simple:
Include direct sunlight when you take the picture. Not necessory to be in the picture, but your lens should be pointing at the direction of the sun. If you shoot without lens hood, the greater chanse for you to get flare.
In reality:
Lens flare is not always pentagon on shape. It is actually the shape of the apreture inside your lens. Different lens have different apreture shape.
It is also affected by the lens element composition. Different focal length produce different flare in different shooting condition. That is, for example, a zoom lens set at 50mm produce different flare of a 50 mm fixed focus lens, under same shooting condition and setting.
Some lens gets flare easier and some don't.
Also, I have the experience that using the same setting, same environment, same film, same shooting direction (tripod used) and same lens, My friend get a little flare and I got none......
The theory is simple. It is up to you to try it out.
Enjoy photography!
