Usually digital cameras have built in fuzzy logics (artificial intelligence) to set the white balance automatically. Most cameras even let you select what kind of light source there is (i.e. fluorescent, incandescent, outdoor, etc.) then the camera tries to set white balance for you.

When the situation is too complicated for the camera to set automatically, or the outcome is not good enough for the user, he/she can MANUALLY set the white balance by "calibrating" it with a white piece of paper. Different camera has different procedure to set, best is to go back to the user manual and find out how.
