I have both 50 1.8 and 50 1.4
both can provide you satisfactory photo quality.
the major difference:

1 - 50 1.4 AF focus faster than 1.8, and USM (1.4) can use manual focus while you are using AF mode.

2 - 1.4 body built-quality is much better. 1.8 body too plastic feel. but of course 1.8 is much cheaper.

I found that outdoor photo results by f1.8 with flash at night may not be good sometimes; no sure whether it is because of handshake or it is not TTL compatible
