for standard zoom, e.g 24-105, I always put the hood for protection...It save the lens several times for crowded area or knocking on some hard object.

for tele-zoom, e.g. 70-200mm, since the size is bigger and longer with the hood, I quite depend on the situation, e.g. under the sunlight
