It will be too heavy for hiking,

50D body ~ 850g
vertical grip ~ 320g
24-70 ~ 950g

You take over 2kg to hiking ? Both 50D and 24-70 are good but may not be suitable for hiking and the 24mm on 50D is not that wide you need to mutiply by 1.6 crop factor it will be around 38mm.

If you don't mind the weight 50D will be good but you may consider a 450D which is around 580g body only. For landscape photo 10-22 mm will be better for landscape. Go to Canon showroom at TST to try the weight and image quality, bring both CF card (50D) and SD (450D) to try.

why don't buy ef-s 17~55is??

why every people buy 24~70f2.8

24~70 is for ff machine good not wide enought for aps-c machine

24~70 and ef-s 17~55 same build in ud lens

no need to buy 24~70 for the 50d

24-70 has weather proof ma, together with 50D, no need to take rain cover lu.

ef-s 17~55 is same as a 135 ff format of 27.2~88

24~70 is only in ff machine for 24~70
in aps-c machine will only 38.4~112

Very old question, 17-40 and 17-55 IS are two different lenses, I have both but will use 17-40 on 5D, while 17-55 IS on 50D or other APS-C bodies are almost perfect.

Even range are similar but 17-55 IS can do something that 17-40 can't.

I have taken some shots with 400D + 17-55 IS in an exibition which did not allow to use flash or tripod, I use iso 1600, 55mm f2.8 and with IS on take a shot at 1/8". This type of photo can never be done by 17-40.

Another example, I took a water fall in HK Park green house where tripod is not allowed, use 17-55 IS I can hand held at 1/6" to slow down the shutter speed for the water fall.

But 17-40 can be used on FF so all depends on your choice. Both are very good lenses.

If budget allow go for 580 it gives you more flexibility.

I have 430 and two months ago I took wedding photos for my friend and consider the output is not strong enough for ceiling bound lighting, but the ceiling of the veneu is quite high, over 15 feet I think.

24-70 is weather-proof but 50D is not.. You need a 1D-series camera to enjoy total weather-proof

The advantage of EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS is the larger max. aperture and IS.
The advantage of EF 17-40 f/4L is lighter and less expensive, suitable for FF (perhaps not relevant if not playing FF)

Indeed, large max. aperture and IS are really good selling point, which a lot of buyers prefer having them.

I'll wait for G10... in fact, I now use water proof DC (ie Oly 1030SW) for all outdoor activities.
Sand went into my old Caxio Z3 lens when taking pictures of GFS helicopter landing at Sai Wan :(
