I have both 17-40 and 24-105, the reason I buy 17-40 is 24 not wide enough for 40D, just only this reason.

For photo quality both are L lens are good, just the 7mm different.

Very depend on what photo and environment u take, hard to say which is better, both are F4

I think 17-40 and 70-200 combination is better and the different is more.
