Which one do you choose??? Or other combination??

EF 70-200mm f/2.8L (no IS) + Extender 2x II
-------OR--------
EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS

Price around $10,000. Please advise and thanks.

EF 70-200mm F2.8L + EF 300 F2.8 + Extender 1.4X II + Extender 2X II

If you want to use the telephoto lens to shoot flying bird, the 100-400 IS is lower than the 70-200 2.8 in terms of autofocus speed

Of course if u just use the telephoto lens to shoot stationary objects, the 100-400 with IS is much more important

I like shooting flying birds, & have tried my friend 100-400 & compared with my 70-200 2.8. I don't know why, the focusing speed of 100-400 is always slower than 70-200 2.8, the result: using the 200 mm of both lens, the 70-200 2.8 give more flying bird photos in focus than the 100-400.

May be the larger aperture of 70-200 2.8 enables the faster autofocusing OR
the autofocus mechanism in 70-200 2.8 is more advance than that of 100-400 OR
my friend's 100-400 has bug

However, with a 2x attached, i really doubt if the 70-200's AF would be faster than the 100-400's.

The results from the 70-200 + 2x is quite bad wide-open. You need to stop down to f/8 or even f/11 for acceptable results.

I would definitely go for the 100-400 if I were you!

the 2x extender will slow down the autofocusing speed. But which one of your two options is faster, I don't know.

I am sure that 300mm f2.8L with 2x extender produce sharp pictures. You can look at the pics posted by panerai c hing.

canon ball, actually you might also consider the EF 300 f/4 IS + 1.4x. I have used this combo before and the results were quite good and the AF was quite decent (but I heard it's still slower than the 100-400's)
