I really don't know why people are too concerned on the no. of photos taken before they bought the camera. My nearly 5 years old 350D fired over 30000 photos still functional, my good old 20D fired over 50000 still extremely ok.
Next time if u want to check whether your camera is new, please bring your own pre-formatted memory card to check. If the camera is new, when u insert the battery, the camera should ask u to input the date & time etc. take some photos with your own card, if the shutter count is not a low no. may be the camera is not brand new open
