Can you claim insurance? My friend dropped his 500D with 18-200 lens. The connection between the camera and lens broke, the lens dented, he sent to Canon SC and they quoted $4,800 for repair. He claimed household insurance and got $3,000 back!

It's not impossible. Many goods repair cost is around 40-80% of the product. So it persuades you to buy a new one.
Repair cost included manual checking / testing and fixing + parts cost + storage + transport. For a brand new one just made by the machine one by one.

Clarify, the repair was $3,000 for the connection, $1,800 to check the lens for moving parts inside, cannot do anything about the dent!

Sniper C-hing, is your lens water goods? Sound very cheap repair to me. I recently asked for a quotation to clean my Big White as there is a tiny hair inside (does not affect picture quality but just annoying), Canon SC quoted me $3,000 ..... and my lens is still under warranty!!!!

The Canon L Lens claimed to be waterproof & dustproof it is quite unfair paying $3,000.00 for removing hair from the len while it's still under warranty. WHAT IS WATERPROOF & DUSTPROOF MEANS?. I've to give speical care to my lens, repairing charges cost too much.

Sniper C-hing, I did not mean to sound I don't trust you, if it came across that way, I apologise. I just want to share my experience with what happened to my friend's 500D + 18-200 and my Big White.

kck c-hing, Big White is notorious for sucking in dust because of its special zoom movement!

fish30d, you mean it is not dust-proof. In my point of view no dust = dust-proof, no matter what kind of speical zoom movement if dust goes inside the len for me it is not dust proof.
