This might be a stupid question, but I just want to know if I can use use Linear Polarizer with Canon 450D camera.
What is the difference between normal CPL and Linear Polarizer?

U can use PL with most wide angle lens on 450D without AF error. BUT when u use flash, a serious error will result.
BUT if your lens is about 100 mm or above, the PL will introduce AF error, you cannot take sharp photos.
PLEASE note that MANY MANY MANY cheap CPL are in fact PL

I have the following experimental results:
1. Some AF camera, e.g. Sony R1 & many many DC's do not use a half reflection mirror for the AF system, u can always use PL. PL (one layer of optically active dye) is better than CPL (2 layers of optically active dye) for these cameras, as less flare & higher contrast than CPL. Also there is no effect on exposure, both with or without flash
2. Some AF DSLR, e.g. Canon 50D, 5D2, when using wide angle lenses, the AF system is still usable with PL (e.g. for 50D, up to around 100mm lenses can be used). There is no effect on the exposure without flash, BUT the auto flash exposure is affected.
In fact many many filters labelled CPL are in fact fake ones, the DSLR user does not aware of this until they use them with telephoto lens or using flash.

do not buy CPL below $200, expecially those sold in SSP, most are FAKE
