Hi, I'm a new user of 500D. I wish to know which lens of the above is the best to shoot baby indoor/outdoor?
Which one's AF is the fastest?

我用緊50mm 1.8, 表現唔錯
不過50mm 1.4 一定比1..8 好, 但貴$2000
35mm 嗰支就未用過

I also a 500D user and my DSLR is for shoot baby also.
I have a 50mm 1.8. It's ok and enough for me.
But, if you have $$, of course, try 35mm F2.0 or 50m 1.4 la. The quality and focus must better than 50 1.8.

outdoor > 50mm 1.5
indoor > 35mm 2.0

I am also 500D new user and use for shooting baby. I also wanted to buy 35mm 2.0 but this lens always out of stock. It is very difficult to buy in the market. You need to order it and wait. So, I bought Sigma 30mm 1.4 finally.

Actually I saw one 35mm F2.0 in TST. But I'm thinking if F2.0 is enough for indoor? Will AF speed of 50mm F1.4 be faster?

People said, when the kid run around at home, it's hard to use 50mm to shoot, is it true?

I am also using 50 1.8 for baby, it is quite hard to focus the baby right when there is lots of objects! Do you all have this problem?

I have all these three lenses, for speed 50 f1.4 will be the fastest focusing lens as it has USM.

Picture quality is also the best for 50 1.4, but for indoor most houses in HK is not big enough to use 50 1.4 unless you always take the head shot only.

50 1.8 is very cheap around HK$700 but it's image quality already quite good when it is from f2.8 or small apeture (ie, 3.2, 4, etc) but the apeture blade is 5 no and has a pentagon effect on out of focus light spot.

35 f2 is most suitable to take baby or small child indoor, the focus speed is not very fast but as this is a small lens focusing is not slow too.

so agreed with yshh,

indoor 35 f2

outdoor either 50 1.8 or 1.4 depends on your budget.

I need to try more on 35mm vs 50mm on my kit lens and experience the difference. Actually I prefer a fast lens as I know that kids are always moving around.

a word of caution ... 50/1.4 is very dreamy at F1.4 ... it's usable but if you want center sharpness, you'll have to stop down to at least F2, IMHO

35mm f/2用在500D, good,因為35 x 1.6 nearly 56,標準鏡,還有香港地,地方細小(我說我自己家),所以我覺得35mm > 50mm,光圈只差一級而已

1.4其實好難用，影大頭，眼SHARP，鼻就OUT FOCUS .

50/1.4 have USM, fast focus for tracking baby in motion

35/2 have the shorter MFD, it can create very nice effect in OOF area, no USM but still not slow.

I tried both 50mm F1.4 and 35mm F2 in the showroom. I found that 50mm F1.4 has got much faster AF speed (because of USM) comparing 35mm F2 but I have to stand 1-2 step away. I think I will go for 50mm F1.4, as AF speed is quite important.
