ahnivlac, i guess you sometimes locked the back dial by accidentally moved the switch.

Flash EV is to control the amount of flash output..... if you want brighter flash output, eg. add 1EV to it.

unlock the back dial on the on/off switch (3 selection), half press the shutter in P, AV, Tv mode, just turn the back dial and you will see the EV bar moves around. This is to set the EV compensation

never noticed there is the on/off has the 'lock" function....
got this second hand 40d from friends ....used for a 1month only , still getting to know this machine

"to control the amount of flash output" you mean the built-in flash?
does it work wth external flash ? I use 430EX btw.

EV works for both internal and external flash.


you can test it by comparing lower the EV and increasing the EV by a step, you will see significant differences.

Without the flash, try also the ambient EV by same method.

Finally try to combine both Flash and Ambient EV control. Make sure you have enough ambient lights to see the difference of the combination, otherwise you will only see the flash output changes.

Try switch on all your lights in your house to do this test.
