IMHO, this is the marco lens which really needs the H-IS for insect photography ......

otherwise I would consider 150mm 2.8 instead of 180 3.5

180mm is the range that really suits for insect photo shooting.
In the day without much sunlights, the shutter speed may not reach 1/180s easily. Setting a tripod could help in doing the job but insect might fly away due to your movement of setting up a tripod.

Moreover, a very small hand shake would easily give a more than 10 pixel movement in the photo due to very high pixel number of CMOS nowadays.

That's why I thing IS might help in such focal length.

I agree that this lens is the best macro lens in terms of both optical and mechanical. I have used it for a long time to take butterfly photos with good result. I like to use monopod for butterfly shooting and a tripod for small insect shooting.
