hi
Not try to convince you to buy either of them (i believe all second brand lens manufacturer also can produce great great great lens), so get idea here, make more research for bokeh and MTF...........HERE exist many crazy CANON, LEICA etc fans, always like Halloween........ ^^
For me i bought 100x400 + kenko 1.4 pro (don't ask me kenko good, canon good or sigma's convertor good, since after i search from web many people said kenko good......but some sigma crazier and canon crazier must has different saying)
but for 1.4 convertor usage need to use "tape pin" method.

Since you already have 18-270 zoom range.
I'll advise you to get the Canon 100-400, I have been using this Len every time for taking birds photos and the ease of use is excellent.

if for birds BIG WHITE (BUT note that it's a dust pump), very sharp!!!
BUT I use CANON 2x + small white IS, ok sharp if f11, but the edge is still poor

i use Kenko x1.4 pro 300 white one on f/5.6 (70-300usm IS, 28-105 etc)
still support auto focus
u may try it on LW
400 x 1.4 x 1.6 = about 1000mm
it s enough for wild photography

Ching, Both lenses are very heavy. Please check whether you camera mount can supoort it for a long time.
For the range, definitely 100-400mm is more flexible compared to 70-200mm. But you have to consider the picture quality.
Personally, I do not own the 100-400mm. I only own 70-200mm f4 IS. I have read some reviews of both lenses. It seems that the picture quality of sswis is better than 100-400mm in the same range.

如果打雀,一寸長一寸強,400mm aps 都嫌唔夠,講真的,因為D雀都多數好怕人,麻雀另計,除非你好有heart,set 定個迷彩帳棚等佢過來,否則只可遠打了!

100-400mm ! It's value for money, although heavy. BUT it is not balanced with the plastic 450D body in terms of weight and performance.
To take buttefly pictures, you cannot go too close to them and 400mm (become 600mm in 450D) is very good. BUT 450D will be toooo slow and difficult to focus at butterflies/birds as they move quickly. Time for you to save up $ for 7D + 100-400mm. Siu Siu Bak IS is even sharper than Siu Bak.... think think. if you can't afford them in $ and in weight, just buy the cheapy version 55-250mm or 70-300mm will be very good enough.
Most of the butterfly pics are taken by Dai Bak:
