17-40 is a wide angle L Len. Mainly used for Landscape.
24-105 is a standard zoom L Len. The zoom range is bigger and with IS. It will be more suitable for taking children photos.

canon ball ching 就講得岩喇, 你講既兩枝鏡根本就唔同, 好難去比較, 但係我個人就覺得依家 ching 首先要了解左自己現在想買枝鏡黎影乜先！

如果影小朋友, 就要睇下佢幾多歲, 如兩歲以下用 17-40 還可以, 因為移動距離未係太大, 但之後因為會走得快+遠, 就會用 24-105 比較好.
長遠計, 本人覺得買 24-105 會比較有利.

Yes, I use 24-105 to take children photos and it comes out shape and clear. But If use the 17-40, you will gets more background, but sometimes the photos not as shape and clear, maybe because 17-40 without the IS.
I will suggest you to buy the 24-105 and remember children will grow up fast. 24-105 is really useful for you later.
