Just bought the S90
I've taken a few shots and would like to share it here

The 30-yr-old Metz ext flash reborn because of a DC camera......

Test shot with the Metz ext flash, the image is so sharp that I just found that I almost exposed my personal information here....... the only photoshop was applied to my personal data only.

I use the 430ex, of course not sync, therefore I set 0.3s and press the press flash on 430 myself within the shutter opening.

Try the night mode which could only give 2.5MP, but boost to iso12800. Maybe they gather 4pixel to give 1 data. It was so dark...

How's the white balance going? From my understanding. Old flash tubes would normally tend towards a bit yellow!

Yes, old flash tubes tends to be a bit yellow.........
But with RAW shooting, in DPP, colour temp could be tuned easily with natural colour.......quite okay to me....

How to use your Metz ext flash on S90? S90 doesn't have hot shoe plug ..... : )

Pls teach me. I have a S90 and 580EXII and want to try your way.

Answer to ncychan ching,

Metz

The Metz ext flash connected with a Lighting sensor (both are 30-year-old). The lighting sensor triggers the flash when it detects a flash.

It cannot work with ETTL because, ETTL gives a pre-flash before shutter open. Which means the ext flash fires before S90 opens the shutter.
So the solution is to turn off the ETTL hence the pre-flash, which means manual output on flash is required.

I set medium flash power output on S90 and block it with a paper in front of flash. This is to limit the flash effect from S90 and trigger the sensor hence the ext flash. Since the old sensor not so sensitive in sensing the flash from S90, I have to boost the output a bit larger.



Canon 580

As explained, it can't work with ETTL ext flash automatically. But you should find that your flash has button that let you fire the flash, and you can adjust output in Manual Mode. 1/2 1/32 1/64.....
So the most stupid but effective way is to slow down your shutter speed to let you press that button on camera and flash.
In my photo, 0.3s 8.0 iso80 was set.
0.3s long is to allow me to synchronize my right hand on camera shutter and left hand on flash button. It is better to first press camera and then flash.
F8.0 and iso80 is to limit the effect of background light, as 0.3s background light would blur my image.
