You better try the 5D or 5D II first. For portrait, FF is much better than APS-C bodies.

D700 is slow in focusing, I joined a photo session few weeks ago used my 5D+24-105 and one other member used D700 with 24-70 and his comment on D700 is focusing is slow.

I lend my 5D to him to try and he said it is much faster than his D700. He is a long time Nikon user.

i got d300 and d3
but i never feel those got good white balance with awb
i think you friend have after work on the picture

about the old 5d white balance on awb is very good
sure better than any nikon model
