Hi chings,

This weekend my daughter is going to perform on stage (indoor, at a school hall). The person in charge said it is allowed to take photos but NO flash is allowed.

I don't know where I will sit and how far from the stage. Also don't know whether it is dim or not.

I have 3 lens with me, which one should I bring along with my 500D?

You must bring 70-200mm at least.

EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS ($1,700).........

不過呢支tele 光圈最大5.6, 而且冇USM, ISO可能要再推高啲, 而且解像度遠不及小小白IS, 500D高ISO 下可能再差少少......., 不過都要屈就下.......

我就未用過........有冇師兄用過可以補充下~~~~~~~

It seems like getting a front row seat is the best bet with any of the three lenses that you have :). Also bring a monopod if you have it since tripod will not work well while seating. Just like other CHing said the keys are high ISO and 大光圈 to compensate for the darker environment. IS will help too if you can't use a monopod/tripod. Ideally you will need a tele such as 70-200mm at a minimum if you can't sit too close to the stage. Out of the three lenses I would take 50.8 for its aperture.

As an example, here is a picture that I took in the environment that you described. It was a front row seat with 5D2 + 70-200mm f/2.8 IS. Please note 焦距 was 78mm which is similar with you 50.8 and 500D. Good luck and hope this helps.

What exactly your daughter is going to preform? Standing/Sittig still without motion is totally different from active preformance such as dancing. I use "Big White" (100-400mm) to shoot my daughter's ballet preformance. The quality is excellent without using flash. However, it's better to have a tripod or monopod. Unfortunately, It's quite expensive.

Another suggestion to you is Tamron 18-270mm. I use it as 天涯鏡 during travel. It's worth for the money. You may take a look of my samples here:

for performance, if you want to freeze motion of people on stage. Aperture as large as possible is necessary. Tele is basic.

I also think of bringing the 50.8 as (1) it has larger aperture and (2) 50mm which is more than my 17-40L.

The performance is singing, so don't expect much movement.

No money to buy 70-200 F4 L now as all money tied up in the stock market. When she graduates next year, I definitely will buy the 70-200 F4 L.

If you can only choose these 3 lens, then maybe 17-40 to take the overall environment, and 50.8 + crop photo when she performs

Without the 50.8, your shutter speed will be too low and everything will be blurred after that.
