There are many USB hard disk choices but it assumes you have a laptop/netbook with you and a card reader. if you do have that can't you just back up to your hard disk instead of yet another external USB hard disk so you don't need to carry so many things with you?

What is the capacity of your CF card and how many pictures are you talking about?

i have got one external 500 usb harddisk. I got 4gb card with my 40D. If the CF card runs out, can I put all my photos to my USB drive?

There are some portable harddisk with card reader built, no need a computer with you.

i think buy another 8 or 16g sd card is a more better option than you bring a netbook or laptop...for you info...a c10 16g sd is only $295 now..
