hi all,

anyone have experience in taking widelife photos in Kenya?

I will join a package tour there and no idea what lens are good for taking photos there (preferrably not the big lens )

Pls advise!

I have the followings:

7D, 16-35, 24-70, 70-200 IS II, 100mmL ,2X

I've been there last year.......
I think my choice of lens is correct........ 100-400L

but your case 70-200 IS II + 2X might be also okay but not as sharp as 100-400 at 400mm

Must bring 70-200 IS II + 2X. Even at 400 you still need to crop!
I was here 12 years ago.

For the big five, 400mm on APS-c is still okay.
But if you look for birds, a 600 ~ 800mm prime is required. Of cos, heavy and $$$$.

I think you need an Ultra-wide for your 7D in Africa. 16-35mm is equal to only 25.6 x46 which is not enough to cover lots of beautiful open area over there.
If there is close up shots for big animals, you will regret that you didn't bring an ultra-wide lens.

Just my two cents.

p.s. 100-400 is a must also. Have a nice trip.

indeed i am thinking of getting a FF body these days as its price dropped quite a lot but i really don't like the focusing system of 5D II after using 7D for months...

Then don't change La. Save your bullets for the lens and wait for 5D Mark III.
You really need a faster focusing system as 7D for animals. You will capture their movements easily.

In fact those animals don't move and let take the shot OR they move much faster then your finger from pressing the shutter
But aps-c would definitely be an advantage there.
