Which combination offer better PQ in a normal day light situation?

70-200 2.8IS II + 2X Extender

100-400L

384+1.4X

I will use it for wildlife shooting in Kenya this summer but seems a zoom lens is more flexible.

i tried the three combination tonight in Canon showroom....and viewed those photos taken by the three combinations in a 27" monitor.

May be i am not too good in telling which is better...i can't see much difference among them... :(

Relatively the color is less saturated by 70-200L IS II + 2X vs others.

Indeed I have 70-200L IS II + 2X already....and still think for the 100-400L because its range is good and convenient but i don't like its design and it has only 2 stop IS.

but for picture quality @400mm (or 420mm), my copies
100-400L (f4) > 384+1.4X (f5.6) > 70-200/2.8IS + 2X (f5.6)

With the bright sunlight at Kenya, 2 stops IS is more than enough
more over 100-400 has flexible range that you need for wild animals
by the way, don't use shutter speed less than 1/100, the animals move.

Don't think that you can use 70-200 and take best 200mm photo of an elephant and then you dismantle the lens and add a 2X and zoom it too 400mm for a dik-dik, they will run and wouldn't wait for you.

Moreover, it's very dusty there, changing lens would just let the dust gets into your lenses and camera.

i think my combination for the tour will be :

5D2 + 70-200
and
7D + 100-400

will also bring two more wide lens.

I will go to Kenya this summer too, but I have got only 5D2 and 100-400, is it enough? And should I use tripod or mono in the van?

400mm is not quite enough for me (my own opinion)
but 5D2 can crop good photos

tripod is nearly useless for the trip, no place for you to extend it on safari van
monopod should be at least 1.7m, you will know when you are there
there4 pros suggested to use sandbag, put it on the roof edge of the van

a small tripod is good group photos when you are allowed to get off the van in some restricted areas.
