Your fd has a kit set already (perhaps 18-70 or 18-105mm). Why not pick up a lens of fixed focal length, e.g. 35mm 1.8G or 50mm 1.4G? Both below your budget.

Since your friend is the user, you may ask him first. Otherwise, you buy "wrong lens" which he may not like.

Why not considering some equipment like tripod or bag. There aren't cheap either. Because lens somehow are very subjective
