Comparing D700 and D3s, the prices between the two models, specification and performance or even the Nikon D3X , are they really worth the values to users for the upgrade , getting our money worth .
Any brothers and sisters out there have any experiences will be much appreciated.

This is a much discussed topic but I will try to share a bit of my experience here.

I have both of these two cameras.

There is a few things significant difference between the two models.
- D700 is designed for semi-pro, & D3s is designed for working pro. As the build quality is MUCH better on D3s (not saying D700 is bad), a true weather and dust seal.

- Battery life. D3s is MUCH better than D700. Some may said D700 can add on hand grip and extra battery pack. But I am talking about original camera setup and not paying any extra on top.

- Response time on D3s is fast than D700

- 100% viewfinder on D3s, but only 95 or 98% on D700 (can't remember the exact figure)

- A lot more buttons on D3s for more direct control. This is a real benefit for working pro. As you want to have direct access on functions with a button, but not diving into the menu to do the setup. A few seconds difference is a BIG DIFFERENCE for a working pro. This is about the hit or miss.


So back to your question about worth the upgrade?

For me, it is a definite yes. But it's not a upgrade for me, as I keep both camera. They are just serving two different purpose now.


It comes down to what are you using the camera for. If every second count and that's about your bread and butter, your living is about the equipments, then is a definitely upgrade.

If you just need a good camera shooting around, then D700 will be doing at least 85% to 90% of what the D3s capable to do.

if you wanna get camera in Australia, this is the cheapest authorised dealer in Australia. Most of the professional photographer shop from them:

You can compare the price or some special deal. But usually the price in HK is cheaper.

About GST, yes, you can get the GST back from the airport. In fact if you shop in any shop within 1 month of your flight for over $300, you can get tax back as well.
