Two different technologies. A550 is traditional single lens reflex (SLR) camera which needs to flip up the reflex mirror when taking the photo, before which the reflex mirror is down for auto focus and viewing through the optical view finder. A55 is single lens translucent (SLT) camera that the reflex mirror is changed to translucent glass so that it does not need to flip up when taking photos and its auto focus function still works, but then as no more light is available for optical view finder, it changes to electronic view finder. The good thing is, number of continuous shots per second can increase as it saves the time for flipping up and down of the translucent glass, and the electronic view finder can always have 100% view coverage. Moreover, whatever setting you have changed, the electronic view finder can give you the immediate result on screen. The bad thing is, electronic view finder cannot 100% similate the optical view finder as it has a little time lag.
