1. Simply 4800*1200 = 5.76M but this is not a apple to apple comparision. Don't just equate it.

2. "(普通 scanner 係咪scan 相好過 scan 負片)?? "

Hi Aliu,

I had consulted you before my purchase of Epson 900 printer.
Thanks again for your help.

Now, I get another problem for my old photo printout taken by film.
When I convert them into jpg files by a UMAX scanner,
I find that the output is much worst than the original photo printout.
and I need to spend so much effort in the editing by Photoshop.
The PQ of final output is various from time to time.

Is it better for me to converted them into jpg files by scanning the negative
instead of photo printout ?
According to my budget, I prefer to buy the Epson Perfection 2400.
Do you think that the output of film scanning by 2400 is much better than
the output of photo printout scanning by UMAX ?
Is there any 2nd hand film scanner under $2000 much better than 2400 in
the film scanning ?

Thanks.

Leo

Dear Leo,

Just to share my experience and idea.

1. Scanning is actuall a Analogue to Digital conversion. During the process, there will be inherent and unavoidable losses. You can never expect a result can be better than the original no matter it is a photo or a film.

2. The losses come from various sources. Simply speaking, do you think your scanner equip with decent light source, lenses and sensor? Anyway we cannot control them, so we can just ignore them here. But we can adjust the scanner parameters. For eg. the no of bits per colour channel, set them to the highest will theortically give you better result.
You may also note that the colour of the image looks different to the orginal. This is mostly a matter of colour management. Your scanner may need calibration to match with your monitor and printer. Visit www.ddisoftware.com if you are interested to know more about colour management.

3. For the storage format, I will recommend using Tiff instead of Jpeg. Tiff is not a destructive format, which leave you more rooms for post-processing in photoshop.

4. If using flatbed scanner, you cannot expect a better result from a film than a photo. Most of cases, you will get a worser result.

5. No idea about UMAX scanner. But I think Epson Perfection is not a bad selection.

6. If you really want to get good result for film, get a film scanner is the only choice. But bear in mind that you must also have a powerful computer to match with your film scanner.

Thanks
Aliu
