Hi kason,
How much is the digital camera link from Belkin? Where to buy? I-shop? As I am using sdony-W1 with 256 mb MS, I think256 is not enough for taking hi-resolution pix and video clips. I am thinking of getting a second i-pod from my friend. But I don't really know how good and the convenient of this link. By the way, an external harddisk is great for back-up. So I really have to think about it.
Pls kindly advise. Regards....Mag Dog

Thank you kason. I just found your reply!
Are you using the Belkin with card adaptor or the one using the USB cable?
To Mag dog:
There are two different types:
One is 'Digital Camera Link', $799. It uses USB cable to connect the device with your digital camera.
The other one is 'Media reader' $850. It has a built in card reader but does not support MSpro.
Both could be found in Wanchai Computer Centre and 298 Computer Centre or buy through Apple website.
It supports 3rd generation iPod. Not sure if it supports first and second generation iPod but sure it doesn't support iPod mini.

Hi dcnut,
The following is what I wrote on Sony-W1 users discussion and my thought of getting an i-pod which I don't have yet.
______________________________________________________
Hi all,
發覺了自己的notebook computer 只有20G Harddisk. Now only 3.X Harddisk free. 又覺得一條256MS 唔多夠用,我朋友告诉我可以買i-pod,由部W1 過D相落去i-pod,因可以用唔知セ線? (不是IEEE) 而不用computer就可以直過,這樣就可以travelling時帶1部i-podヌ可以listen MP3,錄完一张256 MS就可以過落i-pod, 咁ヌ不用带notebook and 又不用買多條256 MS Pro Duo,要$1030... very expensive,then, i-pod 又是external hard disk.
請問可行嗎?By the way, 一張256真係唔係好襟用。反而2粒Sony 電真係好耐用,great!
_______________________________________________________
Thanks for letting me know that the compatibility concern of the digital camera link. So I think I should look at the price of i-pod now. As the digital link is about $800 which is much cheaper than the 256mb MS pro duo. now let me check whether my friend will sell me his used i-pod (10G only) to me at reasonable good price.
What do you think of other digital wallet? Like Archos is only about $2700 for 40GB storage. Well, I am not really familiar with these IT gadgets.
Thanks...Mag Dog

To Mag Dog,
Have checked that the Digital camera link only support 3rd Generation. Make sure it is! In my opinion if you don't have iPod why not buy a Archos Gmini $2,700 with 20G and MP3 function? An 20G iPod + Digital camera Link already $3,XXX!!
Just for your information a new sandisk MS pro 256 (W1 uses MS pro not 'duo'?) only cost $5XX now.

Hi dcnut,
You suggest me to look at Archos Gmini as well. This is a good thing for me to visit this website, as I have no friend using this kind of gadget. I even never heard of it before. My friends are "pro-i-pod" and "against Sony, DC". So I already made an exception to get myself a Sony W-1.
So from Archos' website, it supports CF ( I would imagine there is a slot for CF), if I got Memory Stick Pro, how can I transfer the data to Archos. Or just using the USB cord, right?
Also, for MP3, Can I just using Archos to record the MP3 file from my home hi-fi to Archos, since I don't download MP3. (I got a SAFA MP3 and I have my record my songs that way)
Sorry that I may have too many dumb question.
Many thanks again.......Mag Dog

Sony Digital Wallet !
40GB, support MS and CF
HKD$~2200
Since the website is in Japanese, I think the difference between this Sony Digital Wallet and Archos is that Sony is served as external Harddisk and Archos can be served as a portable digital photo album, external harddisk and mp3 player. Right? Correct me if I am wrong.
By the way, I look at my Sony W-1, I have a 256mb MS Pro Duo with magicgate and an adaptor. So can I use the scandisk 256 you mentioned before.
Million thanks.... Mag Dog

Don't worry Mad Dog. People answer my questions here and I answer your question. It's fair enough!
Using the Archos you have to buy a CF multi adaptor $160 which supports the MSpro. You would better ask some other people on the compatibility before you buy.
I am not sure if the Archos can record songs in the way like your SAFA, but it is definitely not recommended! Why? 20G is talking about hundreds of CDs. It will be very clumsy! Do it in your computer and save the songs in your harddisk. The Archos can work as an external harddisk. Just copy all songs to the Archos from your PC. (There are many discussions on this Archos Gmini in this site. Go and check it!)
The Sony wallet is another choice. It supports MSpro for sure and price is competitive. However the Gmini has certain advantages: 1. Very compact size. 2. MP3 function. 3. Preview photos.
W-1 can use Sandisk MSpro and standard MS 128 . Pro duo with adaptor is the same as MSpro.

Sorry to interrude your dicussion , cos I face similar problem.
Sony memory stick duo really cost a lot, it will be great expense for my coming trip. thus I am considering to buy a iPod reader too.
I wanna ask
For the two accessories--
the media reader to plug card in, or
the carema link by USB,
which performs better?
also, is the digital wallet by sony mentioned above availabke in Hong Kong? or just in Japan?

I haven't tried either one! But I guess both of them perform similarly. The following may help you to make the choice:
1. The Digital Camera Link (The Link) weight lighter and size smaller than the Media reader (the Reader).
2. The Link uses 2XAA battery and the Reader uses 4XAAA battery.
3. The reader cannot read MSpro. The Link supports most DCs as it uses the USB cable from your DC to connect with it, just like to connect with your PC.
4. You have to stop taking pictures while USB transfer, but with the Reader you can transfer file of one card and use another card to take pictures.
Hope these help.
