I bought a Lowepro D-Res 50AW for HK$280. Its not compact, but still small. You can put G3, flash, palm and memory card altogether inside the bag without problem.

Aside from the fashion statement they usually have lots of padding to protect your equipment. Most of them are waterproof to an extent and are comfortable to carry (very important if you have heavy stuff - I'm talking the 15+ lb range).
