I m looking for an extra battery for my Canon S45. Is this Powersmart battery(NB2L) selling at $140 in DCC a Li-ion or Ni-MH? How many mAH is it rated at? How much is the original selling at?

I bought one PowerSmart battery for my S45. However, I found that the life of the battery is only one-fourth of the original battery. In my opinion, don't buy such compatible battery, get the original battery though it is expensive.

Where did you buy your PowerSmart battery? What is the rated capacity mAH (570??).
Please try charging it to the full, take it out from the charger to let it cool down, and then charge it again. If you have a Voltmeter, measure the voltage and compare to the Cannon original.
One-fourth the performance sounds unreasonable!! I'm also thinking of buying a PowerSmart battery for my S45 as well !!

You are right. It's unreasonable for the PowerSmart battery! I decide not to use it any more and will buy an original one. Actually, I bought it in DCC. Yesterday, I went to DCC and ask why such happened and whether it is normal in comparing with the original one. The staff told me that should be alright and if I felt uncomfortable and he agreed to exchange another for me. However, there was no stock and he asked me to return few days later.

I lost the confidence on PowerSmart totally! I prefer to buy an original one at a higher cost. You see, the unit of battery per cost is higher for the original one! Hence, don't try the compatible one!

I went to Sham Shui Po a few days ago, and the Powersmart battery for S45 is selling at $200. How come DCC is selling at $140 ?!

Anyway, I think I'll get the original, just to be on the safe side.

It is not so simple as users are also reporting the original battery dieing after 10 months with 40-50 recharge cycles. check this: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1010&message=3927606

Any other users with positive or negative experiences with Powersmart batteries?

umm... i just think that the canon battery is ORIGINALLY sourced from powersmart as powersmart is specialised in electrical devices and accessories , but canon is not.

The only difference may be the QC between powersmart and Canon.

I hv bought a Powersmart battery from DCC yesterday.
I tested the battery life for both the canon one and the powersmart one.
I assure the canon battery is also new , because I bought S45 two weeks ago.

I charged up both batteries and tested them by powering on the camera , shooting with flash and zoom, recording movies continually until the message " exchange battery" occurs.

S45 took about 90 + 2 or 3 mins to use up both batteries.

The battery only cost $140 , and there is a 6-month warranty period, 2-day one-to-one replacement ( for DCC) . Why not to have a try??
