It will all depend on the lighting, where will you be taking the picture, how active the kids will be and which camera/lenses will you be using. Also assume you will not be able to use flash.

A few suggestions:

1. Get as close as you can
2. Use a tripod or monopod if you can
3. Even if you are close to the stage, a tele zoom will be your best bet i.e. 70-200mm
4. If the stage is dark, you will need to balance among high ISO, wide aperture and slower shutter speed but to avoid too much noise and image blur due to slow shutter speed + movement
