I also noticed the problem, I hear that there is a focusing problem with the EF17-40mm lens with 20D, may be the 85mm also has the similar problem, I will go to Canon service center to check my lens today.

Fotosman @2005-12-01 01:49:31This photo is more stable than your others, but when I look through the whole face, there is no point or area looks sharper, which is used to indicate the focus.
I have one photo taken by my 85mm at f/1.8 (using same aperture as yours) in a dark environment. You may compare :
