Are you using FF or APSC body? If APSC x 1.6 = 640mm, should be enough. I just used it on my 5D to shot the moon last night, take a look there.

APS-C is the CMOS size standard, it means the CMOS size is only 3/4 of 35mm film size, FF is 'full frame' which is same as 35 mm film.

40D's CMOS is APS-C standard, with EF lens, due to croped-factor, the focal length is extended with 60% longer. e.g. 100 mm on 40D will be 160 mm.

the focal length of EF100-400 on 40D will be 160 - 640 mm, it's fine.

alternatively, you may also consider 70-200 f2.8L or 70-200 f4L IS, both of them on 40D will be 112 to 320 mm with large aperture "2.8". If you wish to zoom more far, you may add a 1.4X or 2.0X extender.

Thanks so many reply and information, it's very useful for me, as I already have 70 - 200mm F4L, at this moment, I'm also thinking to buy a 1.4X, according to all the information, If I buy 1.4X and 100 -400 mm, it will be a good combination, thanks everybody :-)

please be reminded that you have to use manual focus if using 1.4x with 100 -400 at the focal length 400mm,

Pls one more questions, if focus length 400mm can't use auto focus, means will have the same problems as 2.0X (as I also thinking to buy 2.0X), then 2.0X better or 1.4X better ?

100-400 + 1.4X will have AF if you are using 1D, 1DMK II.....etc.

其實支大白喺 40D 上以經有 160-640mm (1.6X effect)，都唔洗用 extender 啦！
